Sharing to Win — The Redesign of the State System of Higher Education

Innovation. In today’s higher education landscape, embracing innovation is essential for sustainability and growth. Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is in the midst of a System Redesign — a transformation — and Chancellor Daniel Greenstein is committed to putting in place the tools Pennsylvania’s 14-state universites need to collaborate creatively and efficiently as part of a “sharing system.”

On Thursday, May 2, I’m excited to welcome Chancellor Greenstein back to Lock Haven University to talk with our university community about ways our State System Universities can work together through shared programs and services to efficiently provide innovative education options to Commonwealth students.

We know that public higher education transforms lives. A Lock Haven University education is a smart choice for Pennsylvania students. We provide affordable access to high-quality education and operate as an engine of upward mobility — consistently moving students from the bottom 60 percent to the top 40 percent of wage earning capability. In the long run, graduates earn more and become productive citizens and leaders. It is an investment that pays off. For the student, the community, and the Commonwealth.

A sharing system will see Lock Haven University working together with other PASSHE institutions to allow our students easier access to programs across the system, offer expanded educational programs and provide essential pathways for adult and returning students, and continue to offer access to affordable, high-quality education in a welcoming campus environment that’s rich with valuable experiences and relationships.

By 2025, 60 percent of Americans will need a post high school credential. Here in Pennsylvania, by 2020, 63 percent of new jobs will require college credentials. Working together with other State System universities to provide more opportunities for our students — from traditional students to adult learners — we can help meet these growing workforce demands.

Along with providing high-quality, affordable education to nearly 100,000 students, the State System generates more than $6 billion in economic impact for Pennsylvania. Locally, Lock Haven University’s combined economic and employment impact equates to $234 million annually. For every dollar invested by the Commonwealth, LHU returns $7.45 in meaningful ways to our community and our economy.

When our State System universities succeed, we all win.
