LADY WILDCATS FALL TO SHIK IN OPENER

By Joseph Walker

MILL HALL – The Lady Wildcats of Central Mountain made their dual meet season debut Thursday night, but they ran into an experienced Lady Brave squad and were handed a 48-18 defeat to open the season.

“We have a lot of new girls and they ran into some of Shikellamy’s better wrestlers and even though they didn’t win their bouts they were out there competing in front of a crowd. When you are new to the sport, but you are willing to go out there and compete, that is what will make you better over time. We also forfeited three weights, as Shik almost always has a full line-up”. Commented Lady Wildcat Dylan Caprio after the tough loss.

“We are going to the Sugar Valley Rural School tournament this Saturday and there I am hoping the newer girls will get matched up with some other inexperienced girls and be able to get some good bouts in. I am also looking for our veteran wrestlers to get some matches in and to hopefully place high and the team to do well overall.” added Caprio.

The Lady Cats forfeited 106 to fall behind 6-0, but then Emma Scarborough-Perez won a 4-3 bout on Disqualification to tie the score at 6-6 after 112. The Lady Brave opponent was forced to DQ after giving up too many penalty points on illegal holds. The Lady Cats’ Sadie Caris was a victim of a fall at 118 pounds.

The Lady Braves improved their lead to 36-6, as Kennedy Metzger (130), Julia Hartman (136) Alana Rhoades were all victims of falls and the Wildcats also forfeited 124 pounds. Austynn Falls showed why she is ranked eighth in the state, as she recorded a fall in 1:22 of the first period to set the Lady Brave lead at 36-12.

The Lady Wildcats forfeited 155 and then the Lady Braves’ Finley Boetsch (daughter of boys head coach Tim Boetsch) built up a surprising 10-0 lead before pinning Lady Wildcat standout Kendall Wagner to make it a 48-12 Shikallemy lead. Wagner came into the match ranked second in the state in the early season rankings, as last season she finished in third place at the state tournament.

There was no contest at 190 and then the Lady Wildcats Ashlyn Miller received a forfeit at 235 pounds and that set the final at 48-18. Miller is currently ranked 12th in the state at her weight class.

The Lady Wildcats will be in action this Saturday at the Lady Phoenix Invitational Tournament at the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School, then on Sunday December 14th, they will host the annual Queen of the Mountain Tournament at the Central Mountain High School.
