KUNES FINISHES ONE WIN SHORT OF STATE MEDAL

By Joe Walker

HERSHEY – Central Mountain Wildcat sophomore Aiden Kunes came up one win short of a medal at the PIAA Boys Class AAA State Wrestling Tournament, as he dropped a 4-0 decision to Mason Whitney in the third round of consolations.

After a scoreless first period, Whitney got an escape to open the second period and then took Kunes down with 35 seconds left in the second period. In the final period Kunes chose down and unfortunately was unable to get away, as Whitney rode him the entire final period for the 4-0 win.

Whitney finished seventh in the state last season and improved his sophomore record to 45-4 on the season and 84-12 for his career thus far. This is the second year in a row he has eliminated Kunes from the state tournament, as last year he defeated Kunes by a 4-2 score in the tournament consolations first round.

Kunes finishes his injury-marred sophomore season with a fine 38-12 record and finishing just one win short of a state medal. He will take a very good 73-27 career record into his junior season next year.
