DuBois Downs Central Mountain Volleyball
By Tom Elling
MILL HALL-If baseball is a game of inches, then volleyball is a game of momentum. It certainly looked that way as two Central PA volleyball teams squared off at the Central Mountain Middle School, dueling valiantly for dominance. DuBois was just a bit better, winning the night 3-1. They took the first set 26-16, dropped the second 13-25, then edged the home team 25-22 and 25-23 to escape the gym with hard-fought wins.
The Lady Wildcats, after a solid win over Penns Valley on Monday, found themselves in what Coach Chipp McCann called a ‘neutral’ site. Due to the heat wave, his team was relegated to playing in the air-conditioned, smaller facility.
“We played well in spots,” McCann stated. “But DuBois is a well-coached and very solid team. It is early in the season, and we just have to build from here. We have the potential, and I expect great things from this team. We hope to get back in gear and play well in the PHAC this weekend.”
On the other bench, Coach Jason Gustafson had praise for the Lady Cats. “I knew this would be a rugged one,” the coach remarked. “We played a little bit more consistently in a battle of two really good teams. Coach McCann and his team will do very well this season.”
McCann had equal praise for DuBois. “We are in Class 3A this season, so that will make a difference. We have players who have a lot of ability, and once we get more confidence and play a little better together, we’ll be fine.”
“Loyalsock transfer Gabby Beaubrun should fit into the program, and once Kylie (Rauch) gets a little more aggressive and gains more confidence, those two will be leaders.”
Central Mountain is now 1-1, and Coach McCann is eager to see them rebound this weekend.
They have the tools and should provide their followers with a lot of excitement this year.
