Tree to be planted at site of former Tiadaghton Elm

By Christopher Miller

The Tiadaghton Elm was a very notable tree and landmark to the early settlers of the West Branch area in the late 18th century. It sat along the bank of Pine Creek between present-day Avis and Jersey Shore.

The tree succumbed to Dutch elm disease which is a fungal disease that is fatal to all species of North American elm if not treated early, in the late 1970s thus ending its estimated 300-year life.

On Saturday, June 22 join America250PA and The Pennsylvania Freemasons at 10:00 AM for the planting of a Liberty Tree near the site.

The Liberty Tree Project is a plan to plant 67 Liberty Trees, one in each county across the Commonwealth, to celebrate the multi-year celebration of our nation’s 250th Anniversary in 2026.

“Liberty Trees were gathering places for the Sons of Liberty throughout all 13 colonies. From their meetings and discussions, the seeds of the American Revolution were planted,” a flyer about the project stated.

The event will take place at the site of the former Tiadaghton Elm along Pine Creek between Avis and Jersey Shore.
