Obituary – Jo Anne K. Hoberman
Jo Anne K. Hoberman, 78, of Lock Haven passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at Haven Place, Lock Haven. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 21, 1946 to Dr. Paul and Bernice Reichman Kessler.
Jo Anne was a graduate of Haverford High School, after graduation from High School, JoAnne attended the University of Pennsylvania in Dental Hygiene which she graduated from in May, 1965. She continued her education at Temple University from which she graduated is a B.S. in Education in 1967. She was the recipient of the Alumni Adward at graduation from the U. of P. courses in Dental Hygiene, Outstanding Women of the Year Award in 2010 from the LH Branch of AAUW for service to the community, and the John Barry Volunteer of the Year Award from the Clinton County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees in 2012 for her work with the Clinton County Community Dental Clinic.
Jo Anne was united in marriage to Alfred E, Hoberman in Philadelphia, PA on August 27, 1967 who preceded her in death on July 5, 2001.
Jo Anne taught 2nd grade at the Salladasburg Elementary School during the 1967 -68 school year. She then was employed by the Clinton County School Board until the formation of Keystone Central where she worked as the Dental Hygienist until 1989 when the school district discontinued the program. She was known in the community as “ The Tooth Fairy.” Jo Anne taught 4th and 5th grade at the McGhee Elementary School until her retirement in 1990.
She enjoyed reading, knitting, theater, houseplants, Sports events Phillies baseball and cruises. Jo Anne was active in the community, a member of the Beth YeHuda Synagogue, serving as secretary for many years and President of the Sisterhood for one year. She was on the board of Infant Development, Recording Secretary for Millbrook Playhouse Board of Directors where she was an active Board Member and volunteer. She participated in helping with the opening of the Clinton County Community Dental Clinic where she volunteered as the full-time office manager. She was an active member of the local PSEA chapter serving as the representative from Dickey School while she was the dental hygienist for both Dickey and McGhee schools, she continued her membership in NEA and PSEA and a member of PASR PA Association of School Retirees)
Jo Anne is survived by her two children, Ethan S., and Rebecca R. Hoberman. A granddaughter, Abigail (Abby) Hoberman, a sister, Lois K. (Warren) Brooker, sisters and brother-in-laws, Sonia and Alan Hoffman, Susan Doberstein and Shelah and Robert Luther along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jo Anne was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Barbara Hoberman.
Graveside services for Jo Anne Hoberman will be held Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the Beth Yehuda Cemetery, 180 Glenn Road, Lock Haven, PA. Officiating will be Rabbi David Ostrich.
