KCSD Task Force Reports Due Thursday

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – Representatives from a community task force will present their budget-saving ideas to the Keystone Central School Board Thursday night, Nov. 2.

The task force first met in July of this year, charged with finding $10 million in savings in the district’s 2018-19 budget. The task force, consisting of 38 community members, was created in the wake of word that the district’s one-time surplus of $21 million could be gone next year if district expanse continue at their recent clip.

According to district superintendent Kelly Hastings, the reports from seven different areas of budget study will be presented at a program planning meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Central Mountain High School cafeteria, to be followed by the board’s 6 p.m. work session and regular board meeting. The board meeting is scheduled for the school library but if there is a large public turnout, Hastings said, the meeting could be held in the cafeteria.

She said task force members will present to the board recommendations/ideas generated by their particular group over the last few months. Due to the short time constraint of that meeting, she said, comments will be able to be made at the regular board meeting to follow.

Meanwhile, she said, the district will have on-going public program planning meetings as the board works to formulate next year’s budget: “People will have the opportunity to speak at those meetings. Hopefully, people will take the time to consider what was said by the groups and reflect on the ideas as we move forward.”

Hastings said a future timeline will be announced at the Thursday session and also that the task force ideas will be posted on the school district website for public review. Categories under review have been identified as: athletics/extra-curricular activities; operational management; career and technology education programming; secondary programming; technology initiative; elementary programming; property services/security.
