LOCK HAVEN – During the month of May, members of the William Marshall Crawford American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit #131 were out in full force, with ALA Unit # 131 members and three other American Legion Family members of Post # 131, collecting donations for poppies for our veterans.

For more than 90 years, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) has distributed the memorial poppy to remind Americans that millions sacrificed their lives and health to keep our nation free.

During WW I, the poppy flourished on the battlefields of Flanders Fields among the shelled buildings and bomb scarred landscape. Like the blood that was shed there, its brilliant red bloom became a sign of hope and renewal. For those who would never leave, those who had given their lives, it is a perpetual memorial to their bravery.

The American Legion Auxiliary poppy is handcrafted by veterans who receive a small stipend for each poppy made. Memorial poppy contributions are devoted to rehabilitation and assistance for veterans and their families.

The Poppy Symbol was adopted as a National Symbol of Sacrifice.

Members of ALA Unit 131 of Lock Haven, “Thanks Everyone” for supporting our veterans and their families, during our “Poppy Days”.

ALA Unit #131’s Poppy Chairman, Carol Wert Walker, presented a Certificate of Participation to each one of our Post #131’s American Legion Family members who participated with their collections of Poppy donations this year.
