cm-volleyballBALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP ā€“ It was quite a contrast of emotion in just a 24 hour span at the Central Mountain gym. On Wednesday it was an anxious, intensely tight battle to the wire … on Thursday it was a more relaxed and heartfelt farewell to the senior members of the squad.

St. Joseph’e Catholic Academy battled valiantly in a losing effort with most of their roster playing both the JV and varsity games.

Game 1 went as the Lady Wildcats hoped with the hosts prevailing 25-18 under little pressure throughout.

The second game would prove more interesting.

Game 2 began with CM spotting the Lady Wolves an 8-0 advantage before they found a score of their own. Seems there was a bit of an emotional drain that most coaches expect much earlier in the process on senior night.

Recognizing the situation, with the Lady ‘Cats down 17-7, head coach Megan Coleman challenged her veteran squad to pick up the pace and brought in sophomore, Makenna Bittner from the bench to serve for Central Mountain.

Bittner was just the spark the Lady Wildcats were looking for as CM proceeded to catch up and knot the score 17-17 before giving up a side out. Then Central Mountain finished off the effort only allowing St. Joseph to score two more points, winning the game 25-19.

Game 3 went more as expected with CM cruising to a 25-13 win which allowed coach Coleman to ceremoniously relieve her five senior starters to individual ovations honoring the veteran players for their contributions.

Offensively, Loren Marasco had 9 kills, Elaina Eckley, 6; Madison Brown, 4; Vanessa Soo, 3; with Emily Caprio and Karli Coleman recording 1 kill each. Brown led the way with 4 aces while Marasco and Bittner each had 2 aces, Coleman, Dayna Fourney and Kelsie Buckwalter each had 1 ace to their credit.

Defensively, Coleman had 11 digs with Bittner, 6; Caprio, Maegan Miller and Fourney each had 4 digs while Eckley, Soo and Marasco each contributed 2 digs, followed by Brown with 1. Brown had 2 blocks and Marasco tallied 1 block on the night.

Next up for Central Mountain will be a first-round District 6 AAAA playoff game at a date and time to be determined. CM will likely be the No. 4 seed for the D6 tourney and will probably face No. 1 seed, State College.
