Keystone 11s fall to Newtown at state tourney

ATHENS, PA – The Keystone 11 All-Stars and Newtown staged a good one Sunday night and two runs in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the suburban Philadelphia team edged the Keystoners by an 7-5 score. The loss, after an opening game win on Saturday, puts Keystone into a must win situation in the losers’ bracket on Monday.

Newtown plated two runs in the top of the first but Keystone, with one in the first, one in the second and three in the third, took a 5-2 lead. Newtown answered with three in the fourth and the game stayed at 5-5 through the regulation six innings of play. Newtown’s two runs in the top of the seventh led to the win and moved them into the winners’ bracket final.

Keystone had an edge in hits, 9-8 in the close game, but fell just short. Evan Edwards topped the Keystone hit chart, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Carson Smith had an RBI double; Logan Bower and RBI single. Hayden Hanley with a sacrifice fly with an RBI. Singles also came from Cam Fuller, Carter Frank, Angelo Tarantella, Trey Lapp and Heath Marino.

Four Keystone players shared the mound duties. Bryan Rote did the bulk of the work, going 5.1 innings but had to leave in the sixth of the tie game when he hit the 85-pitch limit. Others who worked the mound were Bower, Frank and Fuller.
