A Novel Beginning – Avenue Bookstore opens April 1

By Christopher Miller

No tricks or April Fools about it – the long awaited Avenue Bookstore opens in downtown Lock Haven on Friday, April 1.

Charlotta “Kristine” McMann, owner of Avenue Bookstore located at 10 Bellefonte Avenue, spoke with The Record about her new business venture.

“I’ve noticed a resurgence in Lock Haven of stores opening up, it’s pretty exciting,” safe Kristine. “It’s pretty exciting how both the downtown and Downtown Lock Haven have been really active with stores opening, so I thought that a bookstore would fit in pretty well.”

Kristine comes from a family of readers, so with the lack of a bookstore in the general area Kristine found an interesting niche. In fact, Avenue Bookstore will be a whole lot more than just a bookstore.

“We are a small independent bookstore supporting our community and other downtown businesses,” read the Facebook page for the new store. “We are offering a wide array of new and used books, books for young readers,  DVDs, CDs, and vinyl.” “We have a children’s corner dedicated to our youngest readers.”

Books:
Avenue Bookstore will be selling all genres of books: new fiction, non-fiction, used, new young adult, and children’s books. Kristine’s favorite book as a child was Black Beauty, but now she tends to read a bit on the non-fiction side.

Movies:
There will be no lack to the genres of movies you can find at Avenue Bookstore. “All genres really, a good mixture – movies that are obscure and cannot be found easily,” said Kristine. “My favorite movie is Witness, with Harrison Ford.”

Music/Vinyl LPs:
“Vinyl is totally making a comeback, “Kristine said. “I have a board up in the store asking what kind of music people would like to see on vinyl, but I picked some to get started.” Kristine’s favorite album is Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane and just about anything by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Avenue Bookstore will also be partnering with young entrepreneurs. “I have a program where I want to highlight young entrepreneurs and encourage them,” Kristine explained. “My first young entrepreneur, Elise of Elise’s Pieces, creates beautiful handcrafted chess sets, and all of the money goes directly to her.”

Kristine also had a 10th grade student at Central Mountain High School choose the Young Adult Book for the month of April.

As for future events, check out her Facebook page for future information. “April 20 is Independent Bookstore Day, and I will be doing a drawing for a gift basket then where anybody who purchases an item in store from April 1 – April 20 will be eligible to win,” Kristine explained. “I also might be doing some game nights later in the evening hours, maybe coffee and snacks then too.”
