Central Mountain swimmers set multiple records, crown first female district champ

HOLLIDAYSBURG, PA – Central Mountain’s swim team competed in the PIAA District 6 competition this past weekend. The team brought home six school records, four bronze medals, four silvers, and a gold.

Stealing the show was freshman Camryn Bair. She became the first girl in school history to win gold and a trip to states in the sport of swimming. She finished with a time of 24.30, breaking the school and pool record. Additionally, she received a silver medal in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.61, breaking another school record. Bair will be traveling to Bucknell to compete in the state championship on Wednesday, March 16.

Throughout the weekend there were four other school records broken. Sophomore Ana Persun took down the 200 freestyle (2:02.10) and 100 butterfly (1:01.20) records while making the podium in both as well. Bair and Persun joined seniors Madison Bair and Hannah Brian to break both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay record times. The relay teams finished with a time of 1:41.65 in the 200 free to receive a silver and a 3:46.99 in the 400 free to get a bronze.

For seniors Madison Bair and Hannah Brian, they ended their careers with two more trips to the podium in their individual races. Bair took fifth in the 100 backstroke with a 1:05.88 and sixth in the 50 freestyle with a 26.71. Brian took sixth in both the 200 IM (2:28.98) and 100 freestyle (58.83).

While no records were brought back from the boys side they also had some podium-worthy swims. The relay team of Jonathan Hughes, Jackson Walker, Owen Wunder, and Leisher Gugino placed second in the 200 medley and third in the 200 free. Another freshman superstar, Jonathan Hughes, got bronze in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.92 and a silver in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.50.

For seniors Gugino and Walker, they also received podium finishes for their last time racing. Gugino finished sixth with a 58.60 in the 100 butterfly and fourth with a 51.37 in the 100 freestyle. In only Walker’s first year on the team he had a fifth place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.30.
