Words of Grace

By Rev. Mahlon Nevel

What is man? This question is asked four times in the Bible.

A man named Job asked, what is man, that God should magnify him and set his heart upon Him? (Job 7:17)

David asked, what is man, that God is mindful of him? (Psalm 8:4) The Lord has made man a little lower than the angels, and then crowned him with glory and honor. (v.5)

And David also asked, what is man, that God should take knowledge of him? (Psalm 144:3) He is like vanity, and his days are like a shadow that passes away. (v.4)

In both of these Psalms it is asked, what is man? And what is the son of man? Jesus often called himself “the Son of man.”

Hebrews 2:6 quotes David as saying, “what is man, or the son of man?” Let us take our eyes off of man and look at Jesus.

But we see Jesus. (v.9) He was made a little lower than the angels so that he could suffer death for us on the cross. Then he was crowned with glory and honor at the right hand of God in heaven. By the grace of God he tasted death for us all

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) Yesterday he died for us. Today he lives for us. Tomorrow he may come for us. The gospel song glorifies Jesus as follows:

“Yesterday, today, forever, Jesus is the same. All may change but Jesus never. Glory to His name! Glory to His name! Glory to His name! All may change, but Jesus never. Glory to His name!”
