Strata & Co. – outdoor lifestyle company

New Business in Lock Haven

By Christopher Miller

Clinton County and the internet is the recipient of a brand new business venture by Mill Hall resident and Jersey Shore native Tyler Beaver.

“I had some gift cards to a national outdoor outfitter store so I was going to buy new hunting boots and I spent a ton of time online researching and trying to find the right ones when it hit me – there isn’t much variety around us locally for this type of thing, especially men’s clothing,” Tyler said. “I spent some time over Christmas, a lot of down time, and I drafted my ideas for my outdoor lifestyle company, Strata & Co.”

In under four weeks time Tyler had built a website set-up for e-commerce, registered the business with the state, and received support from so many people within his circle and the community.

Tyler is not a stranger to hard work which was evident when he explained to The Record how he fell into his chosen career path of following his interests.

I went through high school convinced that I wanted to be a gym teacher, but in 2006 I started to dabble in video production and editing and I thought it was fun stuff, I really enjoyed that,” Tyler said. “My college degree is in Telecommunications Management with a Video Production focus.”

In fact, Tyler attended 3 different colleges while he was exploring his original niche.

“I went to Lock Haven University, Penn State, and California University of Pennsylvania; Lock Haven has an excellent Broadcast Journalism program, and California University has a great Studio Production program and through all of this I gained the experience and contacts with productions I had been a part of like American Idol and ESPN.”

While Tyler still enjoys video production and editing, which he does to this day, it was this video production that enabled him to leave his job at Bucknell University and to begin working for himself with his original business Glassed Up Studios.

“Strata Wedding Films took off like a rocket as a branch of Glassed Up Studios…I still get requests from everywhere like Texas, Colorado, Nashville looking for my work,” Tyler explained. “The word strata is the plural form of the word stratum which is a term in geology: a series of layers of rocks in the ground…this is my 10th year in video production so I have layers of experience doing this, and many personal and professional layers…and I like to target couples who are into the outdoors and like to be outside…I like to do all of my video shots outside.”

Whether it is video production of his newly formed outdoor lifestyle apparel business, Tyler is indeed a multi-layered individual.

“The clothing line came from me wanting to sell clothing with my logo on it, so I held a sale and people started to ask if I had this, or that, and it just began to take off,” Tyler explained. “I will begin by selling very limited sizes of graphic tees and hooded sweatshirts, hats, sourcing products from other vendors that are outdoorsy…I want this to be clothing a man can wear both out to dinner or at camp…like REI meets Woolrich.”

For the short term, the business will remain an online store with various pop-up style events, which cannot be disclosed at the current time. “All of the money the business brings in I will reinvest it back into my business to source new products and eventually hope to afford a physical brick-and-mortar storefront,” Tyler explained. “I am way too entrepreneurial to want to work for anyone else…and I promised my wife I would not dump our savings on a storefront location right now!”

Like many new-age businesses, Tyler has started a VIP group on Facebook to showcase the products he will be selling. THE LODGE – Strata & Co. VIP Shop is his brainchild for this.

To join THE LODGE you will have to create an account on the website to start racking up rewards points. “You will receive points for every dollar spent,’’ Tyler explained. “You’ll get points for liking our Facebook page, if it’s your birthday, following our Instagram page, referrals…” (I did all that just now and I am at 50 points already, just sayin’).

So keep your eyes open for Strata & Co. online, pop-up events, and physical apparel being worn around our local community. And get outdoors – the premise behind Strata & Co.
