50th Annual Lock Haven Labor Day Regatta Scratched for 2020

LOCK HAVEN – There will not be a 50th anniversary Lock Haven Area Jaycees Regatta this Labor Day weekend. The governing Delaware Valley Outboard Racing Association decided on Wednesday that conditions relating to the coronavirus pandemic make it impossible to stage the silver anniversary event on the Susquehanna River in Lock Haven over the Labor Day weekend. Instead the event is postponed until 2021.

Lock Haven Jaycee officials relayed of the decision on Thursday and issued a statement, saying they are saddened by the postponement until next year:

The Lock Haven Area Jaycees are sad over this news, but grateful to DVORA for keeping safety first and keeping us informed in every step of the process. We will meet next Wednesday to discuss our options going forward with the health and safety of the community, vendors, etc. as our priority.

The Regatta annually attracts thousands of spectators to Lock Haven and hundreds of boat racers from all across the United States.

The postponement announcement from DVORA as provided by the Jaycees:

LOCK HAVEN – Members of the Delaware Valley Outboard Racing Association (DVORA) voted Wednesday night, June 3rd to cancel the 2020 Labor Day Regatta and postpone the 50th Lock Haven Area Jaycees Regatta until 2021. The 50th Lock Haven Area Jaycees Regatta will now be held on September 4 – 6, 2021. This decision did not come lightly to DVORA
club members as this race site Is near to everyone’s heart. Due to the continuing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, complying to CDC guidelines and Governor Wolf’s recommendations for social distancing, rating al Lock Haven this year would put at strain on the racers as well as the Lock Haven community.

‘No decision has been made on if the Lock Haven Area Jaycees will host the annual carnival this year, but we are extremely thankful fur all of their support over the last fifty years,” said President, Dave Breisacher. “We would like to support the Jaycees In any way we can at this time and look forward on working with them on putting together an outstanding 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2021.”

Vice President, John Wlodarski comments, “Safety is always our number one priority, and we needed to keep that In mind when making this decision. Safety for the racers, but most importantly, safety for the members of the Lock Haven community,”

DVORA will now turn Its attention to the 2020 Fall Millville Regatta In Millville, NJ, This race is tentatively scheduled for the second weekend In October. The next DVORA meeting will take place on July 8, 2020 at 8pm.
