Tough Day for Area Wrestlers at Hershey
HERSHEY – It was an overall tough outing for the Wildcats and their District 4 and 6 compatriots at the 2020 PIAA AAA State Championships opening today at the Giant Center in Hershey.
All three Central Mountain wrestlers that qualified for the tournament fell in their first outings with Derek Keen (113) dropping a 12-6 decision to Aiden Lewis of Cedar Cliff. Taylor Weaver (126) came up short in his pigtail round falling to Dylan Evans of Chartiers Valley, 11-4. Nik Miller (195) gave up a 5-0 decision to Wilson’s Josh Karkless.
Keen bounced back with a 6-1 decision over Manheim Township’s Ali Alicea. Weaver was eliminated from the tournament with a consolation with major decision loss to Arik Harnish of Lampeter-Strasburg. Miller ended his season when Nick Yannutz of Solanco used a late takedown to edge the Wildcat, 3-2.
Bellefonte faired a bit better with two of their six state qualifiers still in the hunt for a gold medal. Laine Aikey (120) and Jude Swisher (126) move on to Friday’s quarterfinal round while Aiden O’Shea (113), Ethan Richner (160), Ethan Rossman (182) and Tyler Benner dropped into the consolation round.
O’Shea picked up a 11-2 major decision over Ryan Loraw of Downingtown East in the consolation. Benner was eliminated when he was pinned by Quinn Collins of Central Bucks East.
Mifflin County Broke even in the early rounds with two of their qualifiers staying in the top bracket. Nic Allison (106) and Trey Kibe (170) picked up wins for the Huskies while Blaine Davis won his pigtail match but fell in the Round of 16 and Ethan Kauffman (145) lost his first match.
Kauffman earned a consolation dec. over Shane Kibler, Abington, 5-2.
State College came up empty in the early going as well with all four of their state qualifiers dropping into the consolation bracket. Hayden Cunningham (106) began his day successfully with a decision in his pigtail match but fell in the next round. Owen Woolcott (132), Clayton Leidy (138) and Lance Urbas all lost their first round matches.
Woolcott was eliminated from the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Dylan Ramsey of Shippensburg. Leidy stayed alive with a 1-0 decision over Bryce Gonzalez of Pottsville. Urbas stayed in contention with a 6-2 consolation win over Shane Mcadams of Haverford.
Campbell Walls (160) is Hollidaysburg’s lone entrant at states after dropping his first round match, Walls bounced back by edging Brendan Finnerty of Thomas Jefferson, 4-3.
Selinsgrove advanced two of their three qualifiers to the quarterfinals with Nate Schon (220) leading the way with a 0:45 fall in the first round and Coy Bastian (160) picked up a decision while Ryan Aument (195) dropped into the consolation round.
Williamsport balanced the scales with Riley Bower (138) advancing to the quarterfinal round while Carter Weaver (120) dropped into the lower bracket for the Millionaires.
Weaver rebounded with a 10-1 major decision consolation win over Kevin Puliti of Garnet Valley.
Shikellamy had a tough day too when Adam Young (220) picked up a pigtail win then fell in the Round of 16, Cole Balestrini (145) dropped in to the consolation round.
Balestrini stayed alive with a 7-3 decision over Jason Rezac of Liberty.
The AAA quarterfinal round and second consolation round will begin at 2:15 on Friday.
