WILDCATS IN SECOND PLACE AT KOM TOURNEY
By Joseph Walker
MILL HALL – Day one of the Central Mountain’s King of The Mountain is in the books and the host Wildcats advanced four wrestlers into Saturday morning’s Championship Quarterfinal round and have two others still alive in the consolations to allow them to be in second place after Day one.
The Wildcats’ Gavin Heverlly (121), Patrick Tarantella (133), Aiden Kunes (145) and Todd Caris (215) all advanced into the championship quarterfinals, while Hayes Donley (139) and Hayes Henry (285) both remained alive in the consolation rounds.
Heverly is fifth seeded and will face fourth seeded Luke Young of State College in the quarterfinals, as Young, who is now 9-1, recorded a major decision over Heverly 8-0 in last week’s Penn Manor Holiday Tournament. Tarantella is seeded seventh and will face second seeded Altoona standout Braiden Weaver of Altoona. Weaver is a two time state place winner and is committed to wrestle at Penn State.
Kunes is second seeded at 145 pounds and in the quarterfinals will face seventh seeded Wyatt Long of Bellefonte, who is currently 10-0 and placed sixth in regionals last season. Caris is the 10th seed and he will meet second seeded Ethan Brownback of Wilson West Lawn (Sinking Springs, pa) who is now 12-2 and placed fourth in the South Central region last season.
Donley and Henry are in the fourth round of consolations and await wrestlers who lose in the championship and if they win that first bout they will be assured of placing in the top eight.
Boyertown leads the team field with 76.5 points and four wrestlers in the quarterfinals, while Central Mountain is in second place with 70 points and their four quarterfinalists. Altoona is third with 68 points, but has seven wrestlers in the championship quarterfinals. Greater Latrobe is third with Altoona with 68 points, but just one quarterfinalist, while District 11 power Parkland rounds out the top five with 66.5 points and five in the quarterfinals.
Other local teams find State College in 13th, Bellefonte 15th, Montoursville 16th, Mifflin County 18th and Bald Eagle Area currently 20th in the 32 team field.
Action gets underway with the championship quarterfinals at 10 am and continues until all 13 weight classes have crowned a champion. Another thing to keep in mind is the Lady Wildcats Queen of The Mountain Tournament on Sunday at 1 pm in the Central Mountain gym.
