Lady ‘Cats Lose Heartbreaker to Selinsgrove, 39-37

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP – It came down to the fourth quarter and Selinsgrove battled well in the late going to overcome a 11-point deficit for a 39-37 win.

Central Mountain held a 20-11 halftime lead and stretched that lead 30-21 after three quarters of play. The lady Seals went to work in the final three minutes to chip away at the Lady ‘Cat lead and finally went out in front 35-34 at the two minute mark.

With about a minute remaining, CM’s Avery Baker drained a shot from outside the arc to knot the score at 37-all. Then with 18 seconds left on the clock, Selinsgrove hit another basket to take the 39-37 lead. Baker would respond with a buzzer-beater attempt from 3-point range that would dish out of the bucket, dashing any hope for a miracle finish for the Lady Wildcats.

Quinlynn McCann set the tone for CM with 15 points followed by Baker with and Kiahna Jones with 8 points each. Mia Kopysciansky added 4 points while Faith Carter had 2 points.

The learning to win process continues for Central Mountain as they make the transition from consecutive winless seasons to a competitive state.

“One of the things we have been talking about all year long is about being mentally weak and maturing from a mental standpoint to adjust from a mental weakness versus mental toughness and that mindset creeped back in tonight, ” said CM head coach Scott Baker, “As soon as Selinsgrove made a run, it seemed we returned to a ‘woe is me’ attitude that ended up getting to us.”

The loss takes Central Mountain to 5-8 on the season, 2-6 in the PHAC. The Lady Wildcats close out a busy week with another home game on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 when they will host Mifflinburg.
