Brian Hein named LHU head women’s swimming coach

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Brian Hein has been named Lock Haven University’s new head swimming coach. The announcement was made on Monday. Hein replaces Phil Hurley who had headed the program the past two years.

Hein brings with him a wealth of knowledge, thanks to a decorated coaching background that has seen him coach at many levels including NCAA Division II, elite club and high school programs.

“I am excited to be leading the women’s swimming team at Lock Haven University into the future,” Hein said. “Lock Haven is an excellent academic institution with high quality people. I look forward to continuing to build the swim team, and to help the LHU student-athletes strive for excellence.”

LHU Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Gioglio is excited about the future of the program under Hein’s leadership. “Brian will bring new energy and a focus on recruiting, while continuing to provide a positive learning environment were the student-athletes can thrive and meet their goals,” Gioglio stated.

Most recently, Hein served as the head coach of the Razorback Aquatic Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas. During his tenure there, he guided the boys’ youth (11-12 aged group) program to a top-five national ranking. Overall, 18 team records were broken and a number of swimmers qualified for sectionals. Hein also guided one athlete to USA Swimming Nationals.

Prior to his time with the Razorback Aquatic Club, Hein was the lead coach for the Dayton Raiders Club Team (2015-18), the head coach for the WTRC Sharks Swim Team (2010-15) and the head swimming and diving coach at Centreville High School (2011-12).
From 2005 to 2010, Hein was the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at Delta State University, an NCAA Division II program located in Cleveland, Mississippi.

During his time at Delta State, he was named the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference (NSISC) Coach of the Year three times (2007, ’09 & ’10). During the 2002 season, he guided Justin Whitaker to NCAA Division II men’s individual 100-backstroke National Championship.

In all, Hein helped lead over 50 student-athletes to NCAA DII All-American status and he guided over 20 student-athletes to Academic All-American honors. He led several athletes to Olympic Trial qualifying marks and saw his athletes break 36 school records.

Prior to being named the head coach at Delta State in July 2005, Hein was an assistant coach with the program from 2001-05.
