LOCK HAVEN — The state House Wednesday gave overwhelming approval to Rep. Mike Hanna’s bill to name the Piper J-3 Cub as the official aircraft for Pennsylvania.
The 173-24 vote sends the measure to the state Senate.

House approval followed a tart email from Clinton County Commissioner Jeff Snyder who earlier this week chided the House Republican leadership for what he feared was a political holdup to consideration of the measure because Hanna is a Democrat.

Hanna released a statement announcing House approval:

“With House passage of my House Bill 1989, the Piper J-3 Cub now is poised for its deserved recognition as the state aircraft. The Piper Cub is legendary. Leading up to World War II, a new Piper Cub was being built in Clinton County every 20 minutes, and the plane remains popular to this day, 77 years after it first began production in Lock Haven.”

With the measure now heading to the Senate, Hanna said it could be sent to the governor before the annual Piper Cub fly-in, scheduled for June 17-21.

Snyder earlier this week voiced similar sentiments, hoping the measure could be enacted into law before the fly-in and plans to bring a Piper Cub down Main Street in Lock Haven June 21.
