WILLIAMSPORT — For the second year in a row Bucktail High School basketball standout Maria Morgan has been named the top female player in north-central Pennsylvania.

The honor for Morgan was announced in Tuesday’s edition of the Williamsport-based Sun-Gazette newspaper, the honor for players in its coverage area.

The Lady Buck guard finished her junior year with remarkable numbers: 27.5 points per game, 7.9 assists per game, 5.9 rebounds and 5.4 steals per game.

As a sophomore she led north-central Pennsylvania with a point per game average of 28.3, tops in the mid-state area. She now has 1,763 points in three years of varsity play, an average of 26.3 points a game and is on a pace to break every scoring record in Bucktail High School history.

The Williamsport paper described Morgan as “a near-lock for all-state honors once again,” terming her the best all-around player in District 4, lauding her “terrific quickness, great range and sees things many players don’t, making her unstoppable at times.”

A number of others associated with the Bucktail basketball programs received Sun-Gazette mention.

Tiffany Werts was recognized for her breakthrough season, averaging 10.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per game; Werts second runner-up in the “breakthrough” category.

Lady Bucks coach Carl Gentzyel was an honorable mention selection for coach of the year and two Bucktail boys’ players, Chuck Probst and Trent Risley, received honorable mention recognition for player of the year.
