Wildcats Throttle State, 51-14

cm-wrestlingSTATE COLLEGE — The stage is set for Central Mountain’s regular season showdown next Tuesday, Jan. 31, home with Bellefonte.

The Wildcats moved to 12-0 on the season with a 51-14 takedown of State College (5-10) at the Little Lion gym Saturday afternoon. The win set up next Tuesday’s clash with the Red Raiders, 16-1 on the year. Central Mountain and Bellefonte have already qualified as the first and second seeds for next Saturday’s four-team District 6 team dual championships at Tyrone.

First the Wildcats had to take care of State College, which they did handily, winning 11 of the 14 bouts while piling up four falls, two technical falls, two major decisions and three regular decisions.

Most exciting bout of the day came at 106 pounds where the Wildcat sophomore Johnny Shreffler (17-10) used a counter takedown to earn a hard-fought 4-2 sudden victory win over State frosh Clayton Leidy (15-5).

Pins came from Dalton Bechdel (7-4) at 112; Logan Long (16-7) at 138; Tanner Weaver (22-6) at 170 and Tanner Riggle (11-8) at 195.

The bout terminations came from Seth Andrus (20-6) at 132 and Asher Corl (16-8) at 152. Majors were recorded by Geo Barzona (23-1) at 120 and Cody Coleman (10-8) at 126. Regular decisions were earned by Shreffler, Alonzo Henry (2-6) at 145 and heavyweight Richie Thompson (24-5). The Wildcats piled up a 22 to 8 edge in takedowns.

Looking ahead to next Tuesday, Bellefonte’s lone loss this season came at the Virginia Duals, administered by Camden Catholic (NJ) by a 34-24 score. The Raiders’ closest in-state match was their 38-29 win over Shikellamy on Dec. 22. The Wildcats beat Shik by a 53-10 score on Jan. 12.
