LHU wrestling 2nd at PSAC Tournament; Perry & Haines crowned champs

lhu-matsLOCK HAVEN – Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Ohio State) were both crowned champions and nine of 10 Bald Eagles placed as the Lock Haven University wrestling team secured a second-place finish at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, hosted by LHU on Saturday.

The Bald Eagles went a combined 28-12 on the day and finished behind only Edinboro. Edinboro won its sixth straight PSAC title thanks to a 156.5 point total. LHU racked up 132 points and finished second, while Clarion placed third in the team standings with 96.5 points.

It marks the third straight time LHU has finished second at the PSAC Tournament and marked the second straight season where Lock Haven crowned a pair of PSAC Champions.

Thanks to the dominance from both Perry and Haines, Lock Haven is now home to 174 career PSAC champions.

Both Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) and Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) finished second today after strong performances at 149 and 197, respectively.

Tyler Wood (West Chester, Pa./West Chester-Rustin) and Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) finished third at 174 and 184, respectively, and Jake Field (South Elgin, Ill./Marmion Academy) was fourth at 125.

Kyle Hammond (Nottingham, Pa./Solanco) and Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) rounded out strong efforts from the Bald Eagles and their nine placewinners with fifth-place finishes at 157 and 165.

Ronnie Perry took home the title at 141.Perry, ranked as high as No. 13 in Division I, soared to the title at 141 pounds. He was 4-0 with three tech falls, including one in the finals (15-0, 3:06) over Seton Hill’s Joseph Alessandro.

Haines pinned his way to the finals at 285 (3-0, 3 pins) and knocked off Edinboro’s Billy Miller in the night’s final bout and the best of the tournament. Haines, ranked as high as No. 13 took down No. 11 Miller, 4-3.

Shoop finished the day at 3-1 overall and finished second at 149. He lost to No. 8 Patricio Lugo of Edinboro, 19-5 in the finals.

Sponseller was second at 197 after finishing the tournament 2-1. He lost to Shippensburg’s Evan Ramos, 8-5 in the finals.

Wood and Hazel both placed third, thanks to 3-1 records. Wood won by major decision in his third-place bout and Hazel picked up a tech fall in his third-place match.

Field was 4-2 on the day and finished fourth at 125.

Hammond battled back and took fifth after going 2-2 on the day at 157. Siegrist, a freshman, finished fifth at 165 after going 3-2.

For Lock Haven, the Bald Eagles will now turn their attention to a dual at rival Bloomsburg University next Friday, December 16. The Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match at Bloom starts at 7 p.m.
