PSU-LHU to Meet in Men’s Basketball Exhibition in November
from staff reports
UNIVERSITY PARK- There is no word yet on a possible Penn State – Lock Haven University wrestling match this winter, but the two neighboring schools will be meeting on the hard court in November.
Patrick Chambers, Penn State men’s basketball head coach, this week confirmed the 2016-17 non-conference schedule and for the first time since 2013, the Nittany Lions will host a public exhibition, welcoming Lock Haven to the Bryce Jordan Center Friday, Nov. 4.
Tip times and TV designations will be released at a later date, while the 18-game Big Ten slate also will be released later this summer.
“We are looking forward to taking on a challenging set of opponents during non-conference play,” Chambers said. “We built this schedule with the goal of testing our players early and preparing us for Big Ten play. We are excited to return to Madison Square Garden and the NYC area, as well as getting back to D.C. for the second year in a row.”
After the exhibition with LHU, Penn State will open the regular season Friday, Nov. 11 with an on-campus contest of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic against a to be announced opponent.
Along with a contest vs. Grand Canyon in the BJC Nov. 15, the Tip-Off Classic includes matchups with Duke (Nov. 19) and either Cincinnati or Rhode Island (Nov. 20) at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
The Nittany Lions also will participate in two single-game, neutral-site events: the Never Forget Tribute Classic vs. Pittsburgh (Dec. 10), a doubleheader with Villanova and Notre Dame in the Prudential Center; and the Hoops Holiday Festival against St. John’s (Dec. 18) as part of Madison Square Garden doubleheader with Rutgers and Fordham.
Home highlights of non-conference play include a seventh-consecutive meeting with in-state foe Duquesne (Nov. 13) and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup with Georgia Tech (Nov. 29). The Nittany Lions will play nine home games in the BJC before Big Ten play (including the exhibition).
In addition to the four neutral-site games, Penn State will have one true road test with the 2016 NIT Champion George Washington Colonials.
