Late surge helps South survive Bucktail scare
FARWELL- South Williamsport led 1A Bucktail by a slim 3-2 count entering the seventh inning in their nonconference meeting in Farwell. South would go to work behind home run bombs from Maddie Pinkerton and Alizabeth Shuler, part of an incredible 10-run top of the seventh inning for the visiting Lady Mounties to pick up a big 13-2 win.
South Williamsport took a few innings to find their groove and wouldn’t score until the top of the third inning when they would managed two runs. They extended their lead to 3-0 in the following inning.
Bucktail would use a Kendall Wagner double to score both Mak Wagner and Eva Sockman to shrink their deficit to 3-2.
It would be as close as the defending D4 1A Champions would get to a team that went to the 2A state semifinals a season ago.
South amassed 16 hits for the game, including 7 extra base hits. Bucktail, as a team managed just 7 hits.
Kendall Wagner’s pair of doubles led Bucktail at the plate. Lola English also had a two-hit day. Mak Wagner, Eva Sockman and Matti Mason collected the other three Lady Bucks base hits.
South Williamsport improved to 11-2, while Bucktail fell to 10-3. Bucktail will now host Sugar Valley on Monday before they travel to Montgomery (10-3) in what will be a critical playoff positioning game between District IV 1A’s top two ranked teams.
