LHU Prevails over Kutztown 4-3 in PSAC Tourney

lhu-softQUAKERTOWN – The Lock Haven University softball team (34-15) opened the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament today (Wednesday, April 27) with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Kutztown University (29-14).

The Bald Eagles, the No. 2 seed from the PSAC Eastern Division, were making their first PSAC Championship appearance since 2013. With the win over Kutztown, LHU, the PSAC Eastern Division’s No. 2 seed moves to 34-15 overall.

Leading the way the way to day for Lock Haven was McKenna Garlock (Three Springs, Pa./Southern Huntingdon), Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) and Bekah Slattery(Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone), who all shined for Lock Haven in their postseason debuts.

Garlock hit a home run in the fourth inning and Caputo was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Slattery, improved to 20-5 on the season in the pitcher’s circle. She scattered six hits and struck out four.

Slattery picked up 19 wins during the regular season, which tied her for the most of any PSAC pitcher. She also led the PSAC in strikeouts during the regular season.

Kutztown opened the scoring the top half of the second on a Danielle Sienko two-run home run, but LHU was quick to respond.

Trailing 2-0, Caputo drove in a run in the second and Garlock tied that game at 2-2 in the bottom of fourth on her solo home run.

Lock Haven plated two runs in the sixth, thanks to Caputo, who was at it again with a RBI-single.

Paige Stuppy’s (Jonestown, Pa./Northnern Lebanon) pinch-hit RBI-single made it 4-2 LHU.

Kutztown added a run in the seventh, but Lock Haven held on for the victory.

With the win, Lock Haven advances to Day 2 action tomorrow (Thursday, April 28). The Bald Eagles will take on California (Pa.) University. The Vulcans are ranked No. 7 nationally and are the defending PSAC Champions.
