Pennsylvania Primary Sets Up November Race
LOCK HAVEN — Tuesday’s primary election served to line up the candidates for November. The pace in Clinton County was relatively brisk, likely spurred by the three-way Republican Party race for the presidential nomination.
The county saw a 42 percent voter turnout, led by the GOP with its 53 percent turnout of those eligible to vote.
County Republicans followed the state lead in the presidential contest, Donald Trump polling 3,232 votes to 1,054 for Ted Cruz and 550 for John Kasich. County Democrats differed from the state scene where Hillary Clinton easily led Bernie Sanders; but in Clinton County the election night tally showed Sanders with 1,736 to 1,703 for Clinton.
County Democrats were in line with Katie McGinty’s statewide victory in that party’s race for the U.S. Senate nomination. McGinty had visited the county twice in recent weeks and on Tuesday picked up 1,790 votes to Joe Sestak’s 1,047. McGinty will face off against Republican incumbent Pat Toomey who was unopposed for his party’s nomination.
The Tuesday results confirmed the November matchup in the 76th state House district: it will be incumbent Democrat Mike Hanna versus political newcomer/Republican Stephanie Borowicz. State Sen. Joe Scarnati was unopposed for the GOP nomination for another term as 25th district senator. Jerri Buchanan, an elementary school teacher from Dubois was seeking the Democratic nomination on a write-in campaign; the results of that effort were not immediately available.
The final election night unofficial results are posted on the Clinton County government website.
