cm-baseballHOLLIDAYSBURG — Central Mountain’s 2016 season opener at Hollidaysburg saw May-like weather today and the Wildcats put up a midseason-like performance in running away from the host Golden Tigers, the final 10-2 in favor of the visitors.

Starter Toner Corl was masterful on the mound, his defense solid behind him and combined with solid hitting the Wildcats never trailed. Corl was particularly effective in an 88-pitch complete game performance. After a 24-pitch first inning which saw Hollidaysburg score one unearned run on one hit, the wiry right-hander found his groove, mixing his pitches and surrendering just one more hit and one more unearned run; he retired the last 11 batters in a row on a variety of groundouts and pop-ups.

The Wildcats struck early with three runs in the top of the first. Alex Garbrick reached base on an infield error, moved up to third on a wild pitch and Corl’s groundout and scored on Talon Falls’ groundout. Wyatt Koch and Cole Reeder followed with walks from Golden Tiger starter Aaron Smith and scored on Landon Breon’s line shot single to left-center field.

Central Mountain plated another run in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Austyn Carson and two more in the fourth on an RBI triple from Falls and an RBI single from Koch. Two more crossed the plate in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Reeder and an RBI single from Breon. The final Wildcat runs came in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Garbrick and a sacrifice fly from Corl.

Coach Mike Kramer came away pleased with what he saw. He termed Corl’s mound performance “outstanding,” stating he made quality pitches and trusted his defense to make the plays. After surrendering a first inning walk Corl was in command, striking out two and not walking another batter.

Kramer called the Wildcat 10-run showing a team effort. Kramer said while there are areas to improve on, he liked the way his team put the ball in play, forcing Hollidaysburg to make plays. The Golden Tigers ended the game with five errors.

Breon led the offense with two singles and three RBIs, Garbrick with two singles and an RBI. Corl had a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Falls had a triple, an RBI and two runs scored; Koch with a double, single, RBI and a walk. Centerfielder Brandon Miller added a single and and he and right-fielders Carson and Asher Corl made several outstanding catches on a windy day.

The Wildcats’ home opener is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 29 at Mill Hall Community Park, the opponent Altoona.
