Words of Grace – Nov, 12, 2015
The story is told about a teacher who decided to teach her class of first graders about the seasons of the year. When she announced the subject, one bright little fellow waved his hand excitedly and said:
“Teacher, I know what the four seasons are. They are squirrel season, quail season, duck season and deer season.”
The words found in Ecclesiastes are often quoted. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted” (3:12).
Seasons are first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 8:22. God said to Noah after the flood, “While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
According to Jeremiah 33:20, the seasons are God’s covenant which cannot be broken. They are God’s “ordinances of heaven and earth” (v.25).
God is always faithful to this covenant, as Thomas Chisholm wrote. “Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Great is Thy faithfulness!”
