Veterans Support and Recognized at LHU
LOCK HAVEN — Veterans Day was a special one at Lock Haven University as the local school and the Clinton County Veterans Affairs Office sponsored a Nov. 11 observance at 11 a.m. at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center.
The day was special for the family of the late John J. Russo who grew up in Chapman Township and was wounded in Europe as a Private First Class in World War II. Russo never received medals due him for his valor in service until today. Local contractor/Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran Dave Harger worked with county veterans affairs director Bill Bechdel to secure those medals which were today presented to Russo’s son, Jim Russo.
Harger received recognition from Bechdel and Kline Williams and Kevin Ackley, two Central Mountain students who established the World War II Express project earlier this year for their senior project; Harger was lauded for his support and sponsorship of that trip to Washington, D.C. He was one of the “Guardian Angels” who escorted the veterans to Washington, as was Jim Russo.
