LHU’s Sponseller Claims Title at Clarion Open
Rehm, McKinney and Sprenkle Place Second
CLARION – Redshirt-freshman Tristan Sponseller (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) went 4-0 on the way to the 184-pound title to highlight a strong all-around day for the Lock Haven University wrestling team, as the Bald Eagles opened the 2015-16 season today at the Clarion Open.
LHU third-year head coach Scott Moore sent six Bald Eagles to the mats to compete, while a number of others also competed unattached.
Sponseller was impressive and opened the tournament with a pin and major decision.
Bobby Rehm (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), Aaron McKinney (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and Phil Sprenkle (Seven Valleys, Pa./Dallastown) all finished second for Lock Haven.
Rehm (133) was 3-1 on the day and used a major decision and two tech falls to earn a spot in the finals. In the finals he lost to ninth-ranked George DiCamillo from Virginia. Rehm now has 83 career wins.
McKinney (157) went 4-1 on the day and now has 75 career wins.
Sprenkle (187) was 3-1 on the day as he got edged out, 2-1 (SV) by ninth-ranked Zach Nye of UVA in the finals.
LHU returns to action on Sunday, November 8 at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcut Open, hosted by Binghamton University (9 a.m.). The Bald Eagles open dual action on Friday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at No. 2 Penn State.
