For the Record – June 25, 2015

Father Mac aka Aaron Kelley …

There were quite a few Renovo area folks at Millbrook Theater Sunday to see Aaron Kelley of Farwell as Father Mac in the “Queen of Bingo.” Aaron’s Irish brogue added a perfect touch to this hysterically funny show featuring two ladies at work trying to win at the fictional St. Joseph’s weekly bingo games. Aaron is a Bucktail Area High School graduate. Great job Aaron. P.S. Thanks for the dance!

Is your Christmas cookie a winner? …

Mark your calendars – Christmas in July is coming to Renovo. The cookie bakers among you can show off your favorite Christmas cookies next month at the Christmas in July celebration on July 25 at the Flaming Foliage lot in Renovo. There is no charge to enter the contest. Just bake your favorite (Or try a new one) cookies and take them the FFF lot. The Christmas in July is the first of what could possibly be an annual festivity for Renovo. There will be assorted games and activities and vendors will be on hand. Vendors are welcome – there is no vendor fee. The annual cow puckie event will also be held July 25. And an event it is. A real live cow is the star of this attraction.

Musicians welcome …

Plans are underway for a music fest celebration, Budstock, for the 50th anniversary of Bud & The Dynamics. Organizers are looking for and welcoming area musicians to join the festivity on August 29 at Heritage Park in the Renovo Industrial Park. Musicians who wish to be part of Budstock can call and leave a message at: 570-923-0458; 570-923-2927 or 570-923-1915.

Poetry in motion …

The following is a poem sent to The Record by Gordon Allison. He tells us the poem was written by his grandfather, Fred Whittier. Whittier. His grandfather was from the family of John Greenleaf Whittier. Fred W. lived at 529 Ontario Avenue. Allison’s family lived next door. The poem was written about 1900.

Train Ride from Renovo to Lock Haven

When on a trip the other day
To pass away the time
I noted all the station stops
And placed them into rhyme
The train had hardly started
Went a mile and a little over
The brakeman called into the car
Next station “East Renovo”
Some folks got off and some got on
Most of I not tell
But ere I had time to think
We were stopping at “Farwell”
Then on again we sped away
Toward our journeys end
And soon we came to another stop
At a station called “North Bend”
A few miles further on the the way
For scenery there’s none finer
Nestled in among the hills
The little place of “Hyner”
The next place along the way
Where the pine trees are so pitchey
Is where we made another stop
This station is called “Ritchie”
The next is where the hunters stop
With dogs and guns with them
And look about and find the game
This place is known as “Whetham”
We make a start away we go
And at full speed we’re soon on
And after rounding a curve
We’re stopping at “Glen Union”
Two stations by the same name
Are on the way we journey
Only just a mile apart
Called “Ferney” and “East Ferney”
The next is where they handle clay
From mine and into kiln
A very thrifty little place
They call it “Ferransville”
We make start and soon a stop
Before a mile is run
Another place they handle clay
This place is “Queens Run”
Soon again we are on our way
For another four mile guant
And then we make another stop
At “Avenue Bellefonte”
We start to speed away again
While folks farewells are waving
Soon the trainman calls again
Next station is “Lock Haven”
