Lady Bucks drop “Pink Out” game, 39-23

By Bees O’Brien

Farwell- January usually means playoff seeding crunch time. For Bucktail and Meadowbrook Christian’s girls teams, the battle in District IV began in front of a packed “Pink Out” night at Bucktail.

The Lady Bucks entered the night at 4-4 and held down the district’s number three spot, but the Lady Lions at 3-5 were hot on the heels of Bucktail at number four. The top four teams will host quarterfinal contests in February.

Bucktail started off sluggish and were held without a field goal throughout the first half of the opening quarter. Freshman Kelsie Wagner ended the Lady Bucks’ drought with four minutes remaining to give Bucktail the 4-3 lead.

Meadowbrook exploded with a 10-0 run to close out the frame and hold the 13-4 lead after one quarter.

Leading 15-9, Meadowbrook’s Madaylan Faschnatt went on a 6-0 run by herself. The Lady Lion guard completed a three-point play and followed it up with a three-point basket to put her squad up 21-9 with over three minutes remaining until the break.

Facing a 21-11 first half hole, Bucktail slowly chipped away. Kelsie Wagner’s basket to end a third quarter that seen the hosts gain a 6-2 advantage and shrink Meadowbrook Christian’s lead to 23-17.

Kendall Wagner’s steal and basket in transition brought the score to 27-19, but Faschnatt struck again and again. Her three-point play with 5:15 in the contest extended the Lady Lions lead to 30-19. She was also money from the line in converting 6 free throws to help her squad ice the game.

Kendall Wagner’s 12 points led Bucktail. Eva Sockman grabbed 14 rebounds and added 2 points. Kelsie Wagner dropped in 7 points and Adrielle Intallura netted 2 points.

The win by Meadowbrook will likely bump them up into the number three spot. Bucktail can keep pace with a win at number two Benton (7-3) on Tuesday night.
