Castanea Township Opens Bids Received for Long-Awaited Sewer Improvement Project

CASTANEA— On Monday, February 17, 2025, Castanea Township supervisors convened a special voting session to open and discuss bids for the sanitary sewer improvement project.
Township engineer Tom Levine started off the meeting by opening the bids submitted for the project. Two proposals were received: Pine Mountain Excavating from Avis submitted a bid of $224,644 with a bid security bond of 10%. The second bid, from Masters Excavating in Lock Haven, was $249,680, also accompanied by a 10% bid bond, capped at $28,000.
During the February 3 meeting, Chairman Brandon Coleman had announced that bids were open for a 500-foot sewer pipe improvement project in the township. The project involves several areas, with one severely deteriorated section requiring excavation and replacement instead of just relining.
The ongoing sanitary sewer improvement project, which runs from Keller Street to Bridge Street, has been in progress for over three years in Castanea Township. The project experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of grant funding. With the completion of the first phase of the project last summer, the final excavation phase remains.
Levine asked for time to review the bids and deliver a recommendation at the next meeting. Chairman Coleman motioned to accept Levine’s recommendation after his review, which the board unanimously approved.
The next regular meeting of the Castanea Township Supervisors will be held on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the Castanea Township Municipal Building, 347 Nittany Road, Lock Haven.
