February – Heart Health Month

February is American Heart Month, a time to pay special attention to understanding, preventing and treating heart disease – the leading cause of death in the nation.

An average of 874,000 Americans per year died of cardiovascular disease between 2015 and 2024, according to the American Heart Association’s “Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics.”

Bucktail Medical Center is taking this opportunity to stress the importance of a heart healthy diet along with regular heart check-ups with your primary care physician.

For American Heart Month, Bucktail Medical Center, and facilities around the county are attempting to reinforce the importance of heart health, for the young and elderly alike.

Here are just a few examples of how you can reclaim your health:
•Doing at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week
•Eating a heart healthy diet
•Not smoking or vaping
•Maintaining a healthy weight
•Controlling blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure
•Getting regular checkups
•Finding ways to relax and ease your mind, such as meditation

Do not overlook the importance of your mental health on your heart. Being mentally healthy helps in creating a physically healthier body. That’s because many of the risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, are also related to the stress a person carries with them daily.

Heart disease has remained a leading health threat throughout the pandemic of 2020 and 2021. More people are reporting lower physical and emotional wellness. Many people have delayed or avoided seeking medical care.

Unhealthy use of alcohol and other substances has been on the rise.

All these things can increase the risk of heart disease.

For nearly a century, places like Bucktail Medical Center have worked to encourage people to live healthier and longer, free of heart disease and stroke.

Make an appointment with your primary care provider today. Review your heart health with them and formulate a plan to improve your heart health.

Providers at Bucktail Medical Center are available to help you through this process. Contact the Bucktail Medical Center Clinic at 1-570-923-1019 to make an appointment today.
