Lady Wildcats Conclude Season with Hard-Fought Battle Against Athens
MILL HALL-The Central Mountain Lady Wildcats concluded their 2024 season at home with a hard-fought match against Athens Area. Both teams battled for control in the first half, but despite edging closer to the goal, neither could find the back of the net. The action remained tight, with much of the play concentrated in small areas of the field. Both goalkeepers made crucial saves that could have easily led to goals, keeping the match scoreless at halftime.
The second half saw an uptick in intensity as Athens struck first, netting two goals. Despite the setback, the Lady Wildcats gained momentum and surged forward in the attacking third. Several promising chances followed, but the elusive goal continued to evade them. However, a pivotal moment came when Central Mountain was awarded a corner kick. Freshman Carrah Culvey connected with a fantastic cross from Leah Karstetter, scoring her first varsity goal to ignite the home crowd. The Lady Wildcats continued to press, but Athens sealed the game with a late counterattack, resulting in a 3-1 final score.
After the varsity match, the JV team took the field for a modified 8v8 game—their first since the beginning of the season. Both sides produced end-to-end action, but neither team managed to score, ending the game in a scoreless draw.
Coach Ryan Veltri said, “This marks the last game of the 2024 season. Both Jazzy Anderson and Archie Walker played fantastic roles as seniors in leading the youngest squad in Central Mountain history. They have supported the most developmental year while being great role models for the underclassman. They will be missed dearly!”
