Words of Grace
By Mahlon Nevel
There was a multitude of people who had come to the City of Capernaum just to see Jesus. To those people, Jesus said, “You have seen me, and believe not” (John 6:36).
What was it about Jesus that they did not believe? It was his claim that he had come down from heaven. They murmured when they heard him say this. (v.41)
“Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know,” they wondered. “How is it then that he saith that he came down from heaven?”
They did not believe that he came down from heaven. They did not believe that he was the Son of God. They did not believe that God was his Father.
Jesus came down from heaven, not to do his own will, but to do the will of the one who sent him. And that was his Heavenly Father. (V. 38)
It was the will of God to send him, that every one who saw Jesus, and believed on him, would be given everlasting life. (V.40)
God’s love for the world is Why he sent his Son down from heaven to go to the cross. It has been said that the heart of the Bible is the cross, and the heart of the cross is the very heart of God Himself.
