No. 10 LHU Women’s Wrestling crowns four champs; Haven 2nd at Collegiate State Championships
EAST STROUDSBURG– Behind four individual champions, the No. 10 Lock Haven women’s wresting team finished second of eight in the team standings as the second annual Pennsylvania Women’s Collegiate Wrestling State Championships, held today (Sunday, Jan. 28) on the campus of East Stroudsburg University.
Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro), Stella Steigler (Orange County, Va./Orange County) and Lindsay Laws (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake) all claimed gold today for the Bald Eagles.
In all, 11 of 12 Lock Haven wrestlers placed today as The Haven scored 39 points, good enough for second overall in the eight-team field. Host ESU took first with 47 points.
Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) finished second overall.
Emma Heslin (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM), Jayleah Pletz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin), Isabella DeVito (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) all placed third on the podium.
Azariah Moore (Montross, Va./Westmoreland) was fourth and Paige Jackson (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Spring Mills) added a fifth-place finish to round out Lock Haven’s place-winners today.
Shufeldt, ranked No. 5 at 109 pounds, was 2-0 with two pins on the way to her individual championship.
Matta was 3-0 with two pins as she dominated the field on the way to the title at 136.
At 170, Steigler won gold behind at 3-0 day which included two pins and a tech fall.
Laws was 3-0 with a pin on the way to the championship at 191.
Sherer finished 2-1 with a tech fall and a pin and her only loss came in the title-bout.
Heslin was 2-1 with a pin at 101 and Pletz was 4-1 with three pins at 116. DeVito was 3-1 with a pin at 130 and Monaghan was 2-1 with a tech fall and a pin at 191.
Moore went 2-2 with a tech fall and a pin at 170 and Jackson was 2-2 with a pin and a tech fall at 143.
