No. 10 LHU Women’s Wrestling soars by York on Senior Day
LOCK HAVEN– Behind five pins and one tech fall, the No. 10 Lock Haven women’s wrestling team took down York College in a home dual, 44-5, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 21) as part of its Senior Day celebration inside Thomas Fieldhouse.
Prior to the match, the women’s wrestling program honored seniors Samantha Reitnour (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro), Carly Gross (York, Pa./West York) and Victoria Smith (El Centro, Calif./Brawley Union) for their contribution and dedication to the program.
In total, The Haven won 9-of-10 bouts in convincing fashion.
With the victory, the Bald Eagles improve to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in front of the home crowd. York falls to 4-3 on the year.
The Bald Eagles dominated the match from start to finish with No. 5 Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina) setting the tone with a pin at 109 in under a minute of wrestling.
Gross earned the lone tech fall on the afternoon with a 10-0 (2:17) victory at 123.
Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley), Matta, Jessica Johnson (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) all added victories via pin in under 30 seconds for The Haven.
Emma Heslin (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM), Reitnour and Paige Jackson (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Spring Mills) also secured victories for the Bald Eagles to round out the scoring.
This week (Jan. 18), the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association (NWCA) released the most recent NWCA/NCAA Coaches’ Rankings and Lock Haven was ranked No. 10 in the nation as a team.
Tonight’s match marked the final home dual for The Haven inside Thomas Fieldhouse. However, the Bald Eagles are set to host the Northeast Regional Championships at home on Saturday, Feb. 24 with action starting at 10 a.m. Coverage links can be found at GoLHU.com.
