bucks-basketballFARWELL – Every basketball team is well aware how important it is to finish the regular season with a strong statement. The Lady Bucks are no exception and did so against a long time rival taking the next step in a journey setting the team up for post season play with a workman like performance besting Montgomery 62-41.

Thursday evening Bucktail hosted District 4 rival Montgomery in a showdown that everyone involved knew would be a classic contest considering the competitive history between the two teams.

The Lady Red Raiders pushed hard to open the game while the Lady Bucks kept pace a half-step behind, trailing 12-9 after one period. Then in the second quarter, Bucktail began to find their rhythm, slowly building 27-23 lead by the conclusion of the first half.

Before the game, head coach Carl Gentzyel indicated that foul trouble for Montgomery was a key influence for the Lady Bucks road win earlier in the season. Tonight, it would be Bucktail that had to be concerned with fouls, having two players with 3 each heading into the third quarter. That situation would not influence the intensity level, however, as the Lady Bucks played aggressively right up to the final buzzer.

In that third period, Bucktail had expanded the lead to 47-37, knowing full well that Montgomery had the horsepower to turn the tables at any moment. Fortunately, the Lady Red Raiders not only struggled offensively in the fourth quarter while facing a stingy Lady Buck defense, Montgomery also had no answer for the balanced attack Bucktail used to put the game out of reach with a 15-4 fourth quarter effort.

Maria Morgan set the pace for Bucktail with 40 points, 10 Assists, 2 rebounds and 10 steals. Tiffany Werts 5 points, 10 rebounds and 2 steals working in the paint while Abby Ransom scored 9 points, 5 boards and Alaina Tripp netted 8 points, 6 rebounds from the corners. Shae Cowfer contributed 2 assists while directing traffic.

With the win, Bucktail closes out the 2014-15 regular season with a school record 17-5 mark that places the Lady Bucks in the top four of AA teams in District 4 along with Millville, Mansfield and Sayre.

The win makes it likely Bucktail will get to host a first-ever girls’ basketball district playoff game in Farwell. District 4 seedings and schedules for the playoffs will not be announced until Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Bucks and their coaches would like to express their sincere gratitude for the fan support the program received this season.
