LHU Men’s Indoor Track & Field opens season with school record, PSAC marks

LEWISBURG, PA – Freshman Kwame Whitaker Jr. made his Lock Haven men’s indoor track and field debut a memorable one as he led the way for the Bald Eagles with a school-record performance as The Haven opened the 2023-24 season this weekend (Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2) at the Bucknell Bison Opener.

Whitaker jumped 23-11.50 in the long jump and bested the field of 25 for the victory and school-record (indoors) mark. The previous mark had stood since 2002. Whitaker’s jump was a 2023-24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship qualifying mark.

Whitaker also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with PSAC qualifying time of 22.35.

The Bald Eagle rookie was one of several individuals who stood out today.

Matthew Muthler (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) finished fourth overall in the two-day heptathlon. His score of 4,534 points is the fourth-best mark in school history.

The Bald Eagles dominated the 300-meter event and it was standout Ryan Miller (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) who led the way. He was third overall with a time of 35.42, a personal-best and a time that is now the second-fastest in Lock Haven history. Aydan Summers (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) was fifth and Brennan Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) was ninth with times of 36.93 and 37.50, respectively.

Dominic Caputo (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) finished fourth in the high jump with a PSAC mark of 6-02.75. Caputo added a third-place finish in the triple jump with a PSAC mark of 45-09.00.

Garrison Lucas (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) ran to a PSAC mark in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.06. He was 11th in the prelims.

Chase Young (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 42-07.00.

Tanner Walter (New Columbia, Pa./Milton Area) ran 4:33.57 in the mile and finished sixth.

In the men’s weigh throw Eric Zalar (Shamokin, Pa./Shamokin) and Colton Myers (Boiling Springs, Pa./Cumberland Valley) finished seventh and eighth with throws of 46-10.00 and 46-00.75, respectively. Nathan Fetchkan (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) threw 43-10.00 in the shotput.
