Big Game Season in full swing
By Bees O’Brien
WESTERN CLINTON COUNTY- Hard to believe that the 2023 Pennsylvania Big Game Season is in full swing throughout the commonwealth. Regular elk season has already come and gone, along with Fall Turkey but the Pennsylvania hunters are ready for the main events of the season.
The regular deer archery season wrapped up on November 17, but the statewide regular firearms season kicks off November 25 and includes Sunday November 26. It will run until December 9.
As usual Clinton County can expect a large increase in population during those two weeks, but that influx will more than likely include the previous week before deer season.
That will be due to the statewide regular firearms bear season. That longstanding tradition will begin on Saturday, November 18 and include Sunday, November 19 as well as November 20-21. Hunters may only harvest one black bear per season.
There are several Wildlife Management Units open for extended firearms bear season. Be sure to check and see if your WMU is one of those. 2G, that takes up most of Clinton County is not open to the extended season.
Last season 3,170 bears were harvested statewide. Tioga County led the way with 187 bears taken. Lycoming second with 152, Bradford and Luzerne counties tied with 126. Centre county harvested 122, Potter County with 119. Clearfield and Monroe Counties took 114 each while Clinton County accounted for 113 bruins.
