Obituary – Marcella Jane Johnson

Marcella Jane Johnson, age 94, of Corning, NY, died peacefully at the Taylor Health Center in  Bath, NY, on Monday, August 14, 2023.

Jane was born in Renovo, PA on October 4, 1928, the daughter of the late Edward Thomas and Margaret (Summerson) Wagner.  She graduated from Renovo schools prior to attending Mansfield State University, where she met her future husband William Miles Johnson. They married in 1949 and spent the early years of their marriage in Wyalusing, PA, later moving to Wellsboro, PA and eventually to Corning in 1960, which was her residence for the next 63 years.

Jane worked several jobs as an adult, mainly as a bank teller in Corning at Chase Lincoln First.  She always felt that her major calling in life was her family; she was a loving wife to her husband and a devoted mother to her sons.  She loved knitting Christmas stockings for everyone in her family, even including pets.  Jane had a soft spot in her heart for animals, especially dogs; there was a dog in her family for the great majority of her time in Corning.  In addition to spending time with her family, she also enjoyed riding her bike, volunteering at Meals on Wheels and the Wineglass Marathon, and her yearly vacations in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Jane is survived by her sons, W. Thomas (Kelli) Johnson of Farmington, NY,  and Timothy E. Johnson (Kelley) of Penn Yan, NY; grandchildren Christine (Edward) McCullough of Havertown, PA and Carolyn Johnson of Los Angeles, CA; Kevin (Victoria) Johnson of Altoona, PA and Kathryn Johnson of Portland, OR; two great grandchildren, Will and Cooper McCullough, cousin-in-law James Krebs, and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was predeceased by her parents, her husband William in 2011, sister Barbara Wagner Matty Beyer, brother Thomas Edward Wagner, cousin Gayle Krebs, and daughter-in-law Teri Wood Johnson.

Visitation will be held on December 8, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, with a memorial service at 2:00 pm at Fagan’s Funeral Home in Bath, NY.  This will be followed by a graveside service for family at 3:00 pm at the Bath National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your local SPCA or to the Finger Lakes SPCA; 72 Cameron Street; Bath, NY  14810.
