No. 9 LH women’s wrestling closes regular season with dual loss at Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The No. 9 Lock Haven University women’s wrestling team (9-5) closed an exciting 2022-23 regular season Wednesday on the road at Elmira College (12-7). The Bald Eagles posted victory in three of four contested bouts, but host Elmira won 30-18.

Kaelani Shufeldt (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina), ranked No. 5 nationally at 109, and Grace Stem (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle), ranked No. 3 at 143, both recorded victories by way of tech falls.

Shufeldt took charge from the opening whistle and needed just 3:11 to earn the tech over Ariyanna Orosco at 109.

At 143, Stem put on a show as she scored early and often. Stem ended the match by way of a tech over Leslie Monterrosa in just 1:01.

Lily Sherer (Shohola, Pa./Delaware Valley) won by forfeit at 130 and Trinity Monaghan (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) won by disqualification at 191.

Madison Matta (Blue Ridge, Pa./Waynesboro) dropped her bout at 136.

Schedule Note:

Please note, Lock Haven was originally scheduled to host Hiram in a home dual on Friday, Feb. 10, but that match has been canceled. The dual at Elmira capped the regular season and now, first-year head coach Matt Lackey and the Bald Eagles will turn their focus to postseason competition.

The nationally-ranked Bald Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Feb 18 at the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship (NCWWC) Northeast Regional, hosted by Gannon. The tournament will serve as the qualifier for the national championship.
