For the Record – Dec. 11, 2014

Christmas gift idea …

Christmas is coming, the days are going fast, and if you’re still looking for that right gift with a home town connection, Donna Long tells us her daughter-in-law Kelly Long, a teacher and author, has new books available for purchase on Amazon and some Wal-Marts. Target also picked it up as have various book stores: “The Amish Bride of Ice Mountain” & a novella titled “An Amish Christmas Quilt”. She also has one coming out next April in the same series titled “An Amish Man of Ice Mountain”.

She now has a different publisher, Kensington House located in New York City. These books are based on an Ice Mine in nearby Coudersport. The mine is under new ownership. They opened a small gift shop and the new owners say that they had many tourists last summer that had come to visit the mine. Kelly is scheduled to do a book signing there next summer.

Renovo meeting Jan. 15 …

A second meeting to plan for the Public Visioning for Renovo Area was held last Friday, Dec. 5 at the Sportsman’s with Alice Trowbridge of Susquehanna Greenways and a high attendance of Renovo area people, according to Ryan Graw.

Graw said in an email that attendance was higher than anticipated. The discussions held on Friday gravitated toward four main topics. These topics were housing issues/diversifying income, what kind of businesses could/should be in the area, marketing Renovo, the town’s riverfront and how to best connect to it.

The next meeting will be held at the Emerald’s Fire Hall on Thursday, January 15 at 6:30. One more group meeting is scheduled before the public meeting to make final preparations.

Great concert …

Renovo Community Choir did it again … provided a terrific Dickens of a Christmas concert this past Sunday at St. Joseph’s with good narration by Sylvia Moore. The choir followed Sunday’s program Monday evening performing for residents and guests at Bucktail Medical Center.

The concert and the lovely Christmas lights on Huron and Erie avenues are surely brightening the Christmas Spirit in the Renovo area. And, in turn, Santa will win out over Ebenezer Scrooge for sure.

Our Christmas Heritage …

Renovo area residents are in for a new kind of treat this year, a celebration of our Christmas Heritage on Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Heritage Headquarters, 530 Erie Avenue in Renovo from 2 to 5 p.m. The Elf and Mrs. Clause will greet guests with hot chocolate, cookies and warm hugs and invite you to come and share your Christmas memories and stories. Local author Donna Kshir will be present for book signings and reading. Kshir, Sandra Potter and Renovo resident Bob Shank have written and compiled children’s stories that are published in three new Renovo Storytelling books. The books are an entertaining collection of folk and fairytales. They will be available for sale at this holiday event.
