CM softball runs into weather

By Tom Elling

BALD EAGLE TOWNSHIP, PA – Central Mountain brought out the big bats facing a very solid 8-3 Shamokin team on Monday, but then the rain hit. The Lady ‘Cats scored four in the first; five in the second and had plated four more in the third when the skies opened and made continuing the game an impossibility.

Riley Houser, Madison Hardy, Allison Lininger and Harley Kunes all had multiple hits in the rain-shortened contest.Lininger, who also was tossing a one-hitter, was 3 for 3 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Hardy showed her clean-up power with a two-run dinger and a double. Houser had two hits with three RBI. She hit a highly-unusual two-RBI Sac fly, thanks in large part to astute base running by Caitlyn Watson, scoring from second on the foul ball catch by Shamokin rightfielder Gabby Parks. Kunes had two singles and collected three RBI. Madisyn Wian added a two-run double in the second.

Clearly the conditions became unplayable, and the game was suspended to be completed on May 15 prior to the scheduled game at Shamokin. The Wildcats hold a 13-2 lead in the bottom of the third. There are two out and Madisyn Wian is at bat- her second plate appearance in the wild third inning.

Weather permitting, this could be a busy week for Coach Fred Caldwell’s team: a Tuesday rematch at Danville (11-1; the only team to defeat Central Mountain, by a 2-0 score in April) and Thursday home with Mifflinburg (4-10). The Lady Wildcats are 9-1 at the season’s midpoint and are the top-ranked team in District 6.
