Another Rough Day for Area Grapplers at States
Keen Rebounds in Consolations; Kibe and Schon Advance to Semis
HERSHEY – The field was whittled down considerably for the central Pennsylvania contingent at the 2019-20 PIAA AAA State Championship tournament. Day 2 took a toll with Bellefonte and Mifflin County having only two wrestlers each still in contention while Central Mountain and Selinsgrove have but one grappler still alive in the tournament. State College, Hollidaysburg, Altoona, Williamsport and Shikellamy were all sent packing after the dust settled on Friday.
Derek Keen (113), Central Mountain’s lone wrestler in Friday’s action at the Giant Center opened up his day with an exciting 6-5 win over Keito Shaw of Upper Darby. Shaw had takedowns in each of the first two periods as well a pivotal stalling warning in the first minute of the match. The third period began with Keen choosing top while Shaw was holding on to a 4-0 lead. In less than a minute of wrestling, Shaw was hit with three consecutive stall calls awarding Keen four points to knot the score with only 31 seconds remaining in the match. Shaw would then earn an escape with only 8 ticks left on the clock. Keen went right to work picking up a crucial takedown for the win with just 4 seconds remaining.
Keen kept his momentum up in the third round of consolations with a 4-2 decision over Dominic Findora of Downingtown West. Keen used a pair of takedowns in the match while both of Findora’s points came off stalling penalties in the final minute of the third period.
