DCNR Offers ‘First Day Hikes’
by Christopher Miller
LOCK HAVEN – For the past few years, the idea of a cold January hike might scare some away. For many others it is a great way to begin the new year on the right foot…or left foot; whichever foot you take your first steps with.
PA DCNR has again planned multiple “First Day Hikes” at state parks around the commonwealth. If you live outside of the PA Wilds area, you can find local hikes here: https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/calendar/day/2019/1/1.
For the PA Wilds area, the following First Day Hikes are being offered tomorrow, January 1, 2019:
Bald Eagle State Park, 10:00AM – 11:30AM Start a new tradition by kicking off the new year with a hike at Bald Eagle State Park! Join the park naturalist for a 2-mile hike on the Skyline Trail. This hike will take us through a mixed hardwood/hemlock forest in search of winter wildlife & their sign. If conditions are appropriate snow shoes will be available for use. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, & bring a water bottle. This hike is rated moderate with a few hills along the way and a rocky trail in places. Meet at the Nature Inn.
Black Moshannon State Park, 1:00PM – 2:30PM Take a 2-mile hike along the Bog Trail, Indian Trail, and Hay Road Trail. See the unique plants that are found throughout the bog. We will also visit an old beaver pond and a spring along the way. The trail is mostly flat with some rocks and muddy areas. If there is snow, some snowshoes will be available to borrow. Meet at Boat Launch #3 on West Side Road.
Kinzua Bridge State Park, 10:00AM – 12:00PM Start your “New Year” off with a healthy walk along the General Kane Hiking Trail on January 1, beginning at 10 a.m. This “First Day Hike” is an easy to moderate walk in the woods. During the hike, look for signs of wildlife in the area. This trail is in the “open to hunting” area, so participants are asked to wear orange hats and vests.
Wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. Meet at the Visitor Center Lobby. Coffee and hot chocolate provided after the walk in the Visitor Center Classroom. We’re looking forward to seeing you!
Sinnemahoning State Park, 12:00PM – 2:00PM Start the new year on the right foot with a First Day Hike! Enjoy the scenic beauty of the First Fork Valley while keeping your eyes open for the signs and traces left behind by local wildlife during this leisurely 2.5 mile hike along the Lowlands Trail. This hike is rated easy with some hills and wooded paths. Best suited for ages 5 and up. Participants should dress for the weather, wearing layers and sturdy waterproof boots for hiking. Participants should also bring along a bottle of water and snack. This free family-friendly program will meet at the Park Office and Wildlife Center.
