Lady Bucks Hit .500
Morgan Eclipses Scoring Mark

by Jim Morgan
FARWELL – Since the beginning of the new calendar year of 2014 the Lady Bucks have been on a three game winning streak until they traveled to Mongomery this past Monday as the Red Raiders ended it with a 66-48 win. Still the Lady Bucks are sitting at .500 with a record of 5-5 and scheduled for a rematch against St. John Neumann this Wednesday.
Also during this streak junior Maria Morgan set the all-time girls scoring record at Bucktail as she moved past standout Holly Edwards and the previous mark of l,347 points. Edwards posted that mark in 2000.
Not only did Morgan pass Edwards as she bolted into number two on the all-time Bucktail scoring leaders. She also passed John Ogden in the same game, his total at 1,355.
What number is next? An outstanding basketball player of Bucktail, Jason Paloskey who holds the school record at 1,768. Morgan is at 1,393 after the Montgomery game, is averaging 26.2 points per game this season.
Well here is a sport science for you future Lady Bucks and Bucks players, three of these four players (Morgan. Edwards and Paloskey) mentioned in the above paragraph spent a lot of time on the South Renovo basketball court, while Ogden was at the North Bend court and visited the South Renovo court for competition.
Last Wednesday, the Lady Bucks defeated Austin for the second time this season as they won 55-46. The game started out on the wrong side for the Lady Bucks as Austin was up 11-7 to start the second quarter. Morgan started her game in the second quarter as she found senior Hannah Shearer with a hot hand as she scored half of her total career high 15 points in the quarter and added 13 rebounds for the double-double on the night. Also in the quarter, it was freshman Emalea Mills sparkling the Lady Bucks as she scored all five of her points in the quarter as the Lady Bucks out-scored Austin 21-8 for the 28-19 lead at halftime.
The Lady Bucks in the second half pushed the lead as far as 18 points before coach Carl Gentzyel decided to slow the game down in the fourth quarter with over four minutes left. Junior Abby Ransom came into the game in the fourth quarter hitting three straight shots from the left side. Seven of the ten players were in the scoring column this night. Morgan led with 19 points, 8 assist and 8 steals.
The JV game saw the Lady Bucks jump out to a lead and kept complete control of the game as they won over the Lady Panthers of Austin 29-23. Lady Bucks had three scorers with six points, Shae Cowfer, Allison Schenck and Hailey Risley. Paige Sockman and Mills each had 8 rebounds for the Lady Bucks.
This past Friday the Lady Bucks were on a long journey to Columbia-Montour as the Lady Bucks won 60-21. Coach Gentzyel’s outlook for the game was, “Let’s get this record for Maria and then we will work on our offense for these next couple of games.”
There was just more than Morgan setting records this game. Junior Tiffany Werts scored ten of her career high 18 points in the first quarter as she gathered 11 rebounds for the double-double. It was Werts who started this night on the tip-off as she got it to Morgan for her opening lay-up on the night. Then Morgan displayed her passing and assists for the next three possessions down court. With 1:08 remaining in the first quarter, it was Morgan with her pattern drive to the basket for the score as CMVT sounded the horn to congratulate Morgan on her accomplishment.
As play continued, Morgan found Shearer in the second quarter also. But Morgan was hot on this night as she scored 26 of her total 29 points in the first half and shooting 67% from the field. The Lady Bucks had the game in hand as the score was 49-10 at halftime. Coach Gentzyel continued to work on the offense as the Lady Bucks put the game into the mercy rule on the first basket.
In the JV game, it was a barn burner as the Lady Bucks won over CMVT 29-27. Paige Sockman had a big night for a double-double as she led with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
This past Monday, Montgomery ended the winning streak as they beat the Lady Bucks 66-48. In the first quarter, the Lady Bucks jumped out to an 8-1 lead. All of a sudden everything would go sour as the Lady Red Raiders would end the quarter on a 16-4 run to lead 17-12. The rest of the half saw the Lady Bucks struggle to find the bottom of the net as the Lady Red Raiders extended the lead at halftime 34-19.
Coach Gentzyel tried to assure the Lady Bucks that “This is nothing as we could not get the ball to fall through the rim. We can stay with them, but we need to pick up the boxing out. We cannot allow them to have three and four shots at a time.”
The Lady Bucks played even with the Lady Red Raiders in the second half, but the damage was done in the first half. Bucktail could not find anybody else with a hot hand and let Montgomery get too many shots on offense as the Lady Red Raiders just dominated the offensive boards.
In the JV game, the Lady Bucks came from behind 25-9 to win 30-27 over the Lady Red Raiders of Montgomery. High scorer for the Lady Bucks was Emalea Mills with 9 points and Allison Schenck with 7 points.
Next up for the Lady Bucks was this Wednesday at St. John Neumann for the 6:00 PM start. Then it’s a long Saturday afternoon ride to Our Lady of Lourdes in Shamokin for a 1:00 PM tip-off. Then its back home on Tuesday for the rematch against Montgomery starting at 6 p.m.
