Central Mountain Softball Takes Two from Selinsgrove

By Tom Elling

MILL HALL- It was an unusual double-header. On April 15th, Central
Mountain was at Selinsgrove with a comfortable 10-1 lead when rains
halted the contest in the middle of the 4th. The coaches and ADs agreed
that the game would resume on May 1st when the Lady Seals traveled to
Mill Hall. The Selinsgrove team didn’t fare much better as all they
could collect was a single by Peyton Yerger, while the ‘Cats put the
icing on the proverbial cake with two runs in their 6th. Back-to-back
walks to Cora Myers and Josey Shultz and a clutch two-run single from
Ava Doyle extended the lead to 12-1 in the 6th. The Seals went
one-two-three in the bottom of that inning. CM took win number 10 with
momentum heading into the second game.

Eight of the nine spots in the lineup produced at least one hit. Myers
smashed two HRs- a 3-run blast in the first and a solo shot in the 4th.
Katelyn Bowman and Mallory Wunder also hit roundtrippers. Bowman’s a
3-RBI dinger. Aubrey Eiler had a double, and Ava Doyle two singles to
add to the 12-hit attack. Camdyn Weaver got the mound win.

In game number two, CM’s Josey Shultz held the visitors hitless for
three, then Mallory Wunder pitched the next two, allowing one run on
three hits. Meanwhile the entire line-up kept the hit barrage going.
They scored seven runs in the bottom of the first. Four hits, two walks
and three Seal errors gave the confident home team a 7-0 cushion. Cora
Myers and Wunder each had two-run singles. The ‘Cats added another run
in the 2nd, nifty baserunning by Shutlz, a single by Aubrey Miller and a
Seal outfield error gave the home team their 8th run.

Speedy Taylor Doyle tripled to lead off the 3rd then scored easily on an
infield groundout by sister Ava. Cirstyn Watson ripped a double to left
but was stranded. CM led zip.

Neither team threatened in the 4th, but Selinsgrove produced a run the
their 5th with a lead-off single by Peyton Yerger. An infield error put
Madison Burd at first and allowed Yerger to move to 3rd. Danika Burd
followed with a single to score Yerger. Burd was cut down trying to move
to third on an 8-2-5 play. (Taylor Doyle to Katelyn Bowman to Aubrey
Miller). The score stood at 9-1 into the Wildcat 5th.

The Doyles (Taylor a single and Ava a walk) got things going with some
clever baserunning then lead-off hitter Aubrey Eiler drove in Taylor and
after a walk to Cirstyn Watson, Katelyn hit a deep sacrifice fly to
center to cloe out their second ten-run-rule win of the day.

Shultz earned the win; Madison Burd took the loss. Central Mountain is
now 11-1 and will next play Jersey Shore at the Shore complex tomorrow
night. CM is ranked #1 in the District 6 5A softball rankings (piaad6.org).
